Daniel in Question

Porphry and Company

There is a group of scholars who either doubt that Daniel wrote the book bearing his name or believe that the book was written as history after the fact and not as prophecy before the fact.  The origin of this thinking is very old.  In fact the roots of this theory go back to the second century after Christ.  In AD 233 a man by the name of Porphry wrote fifteen books aimed at discrediting Christianity.  The title of the work, “Against the Christians,” is a broad clue to his beliefs.  He was a polytheist, believing in and worshiping many gods.  He held the view that the book of Daniel was written as a history in 165 BC after all of the so-called “prophecies” had already happened.  It is clear that Jesus would not have agreed with Porphry (Matthew 24:15).

Matthew 24:15-16

15 Therefore when you see the ABOMINATION OF DESOLATION which was spoken of through Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place (let the reader understand),
16 then those who are in Judea must flee to the mountains...
