Daniel Chapter Six

Daniel is in his early eighties when the trap was laid for him in Chapter six. This is the last recorded threat against his life. He might have easily said, "I am too old for this," or become bitter against God, but he did not. He gives us an amazing testimony of running the race for God to the end. The church has always been enriched by older men and women who have retired from work-life but not from church- life. There is something beautiful about older men and women enduring the struggles of life and keeping their testimony strong for the Lord.
There has been much discussion about who this Darius is. The historical record is clear that Cyrus the Great invaded Babylon on October 11 or 12, 539BC so who is this Darius the Mede mentioned in verse 31? Note first of all that he is called Darius the Mede. The attack on Babylon was a joint venture between the Medes and the Persians. Clearly the Persians were the stronger of the two. Darius was appointed by Cyrus the Great to his post.
Vs. 7 This verse provides a fascinating text for preaching. A compelling title might be, "No God For Thirty Days." What would the world be like if for just one day King Darius was god? What chaos would erupt if King Darius truly were to be god for thirty days?
